Becoming the league’s most valuable player wasn’t on Dexter Kuczek’s mind entering the 2017-18 season.
He knew, as a 20-year old, that this season would be his last in the MJHL and that he wanted to make it count, but he didn’t think leading the league in scoring and winning the most prestigious award in the league was a possibility.
Boy was he wrong.
After an incredible season with 37 goals and 55 assists, Kuczek was named the Steve “Boomer” Harysh MVP Award.”I know I had a good season last year, but I didn’t think I’d be MVP and top scorer,” said Kuczek, who had 67 points in the 2016-17 season. “It was nice to win that.”
Kuczek didn’t take all the credit for winning the award, as he gave a lot of the credit towards his teammates.”Obviously, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the team, especially my linemates Levi Cudmore and Dale Goodbrandson. Playing with them has been unreal,” said Kuczek.
Goodbranson said playing with Kuczek has been a blast and that the team couldn’t have been happier to see their leader win the award.
“It’s been such an exciting year to play with him. He took over this league,” said Goodbrandson. “As great of a hockey player he is, he is an even better guy. It couldn’t have happened to anybody better. Everybody on the team is just so proud of him and he really is the leader of the team.”
